Namu Amida Butsu
On this wonderful occasion—Wailuku Hongwanji Mission’s 120th Anniversary—I would like to express my sincere gratitude and offer my congratulations to Wailuku Hongwanji’s ohana to commemorate its memorable celebration. I am truly grateful to be part of this occasion and rejoice in this precious moment together with you.
As you may know, the original temple was built approximately 120 years ago on the corner of Market and Wells Streets in Wailuku. The original temple was demolished but photographs of the temple still exist. It was a beautiful Japanese style temple—very stately.
In 1941, Wailuku Hongwanji moved the temple to its present location on Vineyard and Kaniela Streets. During Wailuku Hongwanji’s 120 years of history, we must remember and be grateful for the countless number of Nembutsu followers who selflessly dedicated, supported, and who willingly spread the Nembutsu teachings throughout the community.
Many of our members were employed by the sugar plantation; many of them went through very difficult and challenging times. However, they learned that Amida Buddha’s great wisdom and compassion were always reaching into their hearts, regardless of their happy or sad times.
We should remember that Amida Buddha is always reaching into our hearts and showing us the light, which shows us the path of truth. All Nembutsu followers will receive the courage in their daily lives and be able to rejoice in the happiness with Amida’s infinite wisdom and compassion.
We learned through our temple services, activities, teachings, and other dedicated Nembutsu followers that have guided us and provided spiritual encouragements in our daily lives.
We all remember our Issei’s wonderful and precious slogan "Kodomo-no-tameni" which when translated into English means "For the Sake of the Children." This slogan is truly a precious gift given to all of us. Through our dedicated members’ efforts, we are all able to rejoice in the happiness with others.
In celebrating our 120th Anniversary, may we remember the slogan, "Okage-sama-de" and know that we are able to celebrate this anniversary because of countless members’ sincere and dedicated support of this temple.
- We are here as we are, "Okage-sama-de" because of our temples’ wonderful programs.
- We are able to enjoy our temple activities and lives, and "Okage-sama-de" because of our great Nembutsu followers’ sincere and warm kindness.
- We are all able to receive the great guidance of the Nembutsu in our lives. May we all have a sincere mind of "Okage-sama-de, a great mind of appreciation and gratitude" as we celebrate our 120th anniversary together with our Nembutsu followers and community.
- May we all rejoice in the great light and life of Amida Buddha and live our everyday lives within the great path of the Nembutsu.
I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all Wailuku Hongwanji Mission and Nembutsu families.
