Under the leadership of Tanya Ito-Shima and Sheri Tam Ho, the Wailuku Hongwanji Summer Fun Program recently celebrated its 20th year of operation. The program supports Maui’s families by providing a seven-week summer activity session from early June to mid-July. The program is designed to provide a safe and diverse program for elementary school-aged children. Program areas focus on gross motor activities, individual self-expression, and social development. Specific program activities include:
- language arts and math
- arts and crafts
- music, dance, and creative movement
- fitness activities
The program also includes weekly trips to the Wailuku Swimming Pool, and weekly excursions to places of interest and fun for the children. Examples of recent excursions include visits to the Kula Strawberry Farm, Maui Tropical Plantation, and movies at the Kaahumanu Theaters. Additionally, the program includes planned events such as a mini-carnival, family night, and book fair, which are enjoyed by students and staff alike.
